Album of the Week: Ann Peebles
Today's pick, Ann Peebles' soul from Memphis, "I Can't Stand the Rain."
Greg Mitchell is the author of a dozen books and now writer/director of award-winning films. He was also a longtime editor of the legendary Crawdaddy.
Occasionally I will drift away from the Song of the Day concept to tout a perhaps under-appreciated lp (some of which I am re-discovering thanks to my new Return to Vinyl). So today, the 1973 album of Ann Peebles, I Can’t Stand the Rain, produced by Al Green’s man Willie Mitchell, one of the best records of the 1970s. This was her fourth album. Here are five cuts but every song on the lp is excellent to great (fairly rare even then). Enjoy, then subscribe, it’s still free. First, today’s political cartoon.
Title cut, co-written by Ann and later covered by many, including Tina Turner, but never equaled (and just 2:30). For what it’s worth, ranked as #197 among the greatest songs in history by Rolling Stone. Rain drops effect courtesy of an electric timbale.
“Until You Came Into My Life”
Another true classic, “I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down”
“One Way Street”
“You Keep Me Hangin’ On”
