Ask Greg Anything: A New, Maybe One-and-Done, Feature...
With a nod to Greil Marcus, a chance to put me on the hot seat or just stroll with me down memory lane. Plus: a new cut from Wilco.
Greg Mitchell is the author of a dozen books and now writer/director of award-winning films. He was the longtime executive editor of the legendary Crawdaddy. His newsletter remains free when you subscribe. His film “Atomic Cover-up” became free via Kanopy this month and the current “Memorial Day Massacre: Workers Die, Film Buried" remains free on the PBS site. Both have companion books.
A slow week, so why not try this. Reader interest and support for this newsletter, far as I can judge (and thank you to those who have pledged money if this ever goes “pay”), remains strong, but engagement with your humble scribe has never been strong, perhaps because I have not gone out of my way to request or demand it.
So let’s try this.
Greil Marcus hosts a popular regular feature on his Substack called “Ask Greil.” Now, it’s true, he may have far more, and far more passionate/cranky, fans so I can’t expect the level of response he provokes. Also, I can’t count on drawing countless Dock Boggs fans. (I’ve read most of Greil’s books but never met him in person, but I did edit his regular column for the short-lived NYC magazine Politicks, edited by Thomas B. Morgan, where I worked, and we corresponded a bit in the 1980s.) But now let’s see what, if anything, happens here.
Simply: post a question in the Comments, or to my email if you have it. I’ll pick a few to answer (assuming there are a few). All subjects, in theory, allowed, from music and movies to politics and “culture.” Here’s the Comments tab, if that helps. Answers here in a newsletter post soon…Fire away!
Today’s bonus, one haunting new music track from Wilco. I have to admit, I checked it out originally because I wondered if “Ten Dead” referred to the unionists murdered in the Memorial Day Massacre in Chicago in 1937—subject of my latest PBS film and book. All I can say is, I don’t think so, but the lyrics do apply….
Had Merritt Garland not sat on his hands for a year, would the Republicans have a different front-runner?
Hi Greg, random & important question, I can't find the answer to... Do we know exactly when Emperor Hirohito knew that Nagaski had been bombed? Was it definitely before his August 14th 1945 recorded surrender speech (broadcast the next day)? I thought I heard somewhere (not sure where) that he might have given that speach not even knowing about Nagasaki. Thanks & regards,
