Cartoons Friday, Plus: Allen Toussaint Leaves His Stamp
And complete FireAid concert with time stamps for each performer
Greg Mitchell is the author of more than a dozen books (see link) and now writer/director of three award-winning films aired via PBS, including “Atomic Cover-up” and “Memorial Day Massacre” which are still up at PBS.org. Watch trailer for my acclaimed 2025 film “The Atomic Bowl.” Before all that, he was a longtime editor of the legendary Crawdaddy. You can still subscribe to this newsletter for FREE.
Before we get to today’s cartoons, it was swell to see yesterday that the great New Orleans piano man, producer and one of our era’s greatest songwriters, Allen Toussaint, is finally get his own USPS forever stamp. Last year, after our latest trip to NOLA, I posted another one of my “profiles in music” re: Allen with more than a dozen of his best songs.
Just one of his hits, live, and so timely politically, “Yes We Can Can.”
With last night’s FireAid concerts in L.A. not starting until 10 pm ET, I only managed to watch the first one-third of the eventual six hours. Watching a lot of geezers did not help me feel “forever young” as Rodney Stewart warbled, but I enjoyed some of the oldsters and some of younger artists though several not in good voice at all (not mentioning any names). Pink did a great “Me and Bobby McGhee,” I must say. I was long in bed by the time the sort-of Nirvana reunion happened etc.
Anyway, the entire concerts remain up and here it is below, with these alleged timestamps, which I have not verified:
10:45 Green Day (with Billie Eilish at 12:10) 22:23 Billy Crystal 28:43 Alanis Morissette 39:54 Anderson.Paak & Free Nationals (with Sheila E at 43:44, and Dr. Dre at 47:24) 54:50 Joni Mitchell 1:04:38 Dawes (with Stephen Stills & Mike Campbell at 1:09:39, and Graham Nash at 1:15:35) 1:22:22 P!nk 1:38:49 Rod Stewart 1:52:39 John Mayer 2:10:10 Earth Wind & Fire 2:17:02 Black Crowes (with John & Shane Fogerty at 2:22:25, and Slash at 2:27:22) 2:31:38 Gracie Abrams with Aaron Dessner 2:39:34 No Doubt 2:56:44 Tate McRae 3:03:49 Jelly Roll 3:13:26 Stevie Nicks 3:34:25 Katy Perry 3:44:38 Nirvana (with St. Vincent 3:44:38, Kim Gordon 3:48:35, Joan Jett at 3:52:08, and Violet Grohl at 3:55:29) 4:01:44 Lil Baby 4:08:55 Red Hot Chili Peppers 4:35:37 Olivia Rodrigo 4:47:05 Sting 5:00:46 Peso Pluma 5:06:48 Billie Eilish with Finneas 5:28:43 Stevie Wonder (with Sting at 5:34:28) 5:43:56 Lady Gaga
Cartooning UP!
Below from the great Lalo Alcaraz is, of course, a takeoff on the famous “Twilight Zone” episode with young William Shatner spotting a monster on the wing of the airliner. Lalo writes: “Nightmare at 47,000 Feet. The very stupid and racist President doubles down on blaming minorities for every single thing that has & will go wrong during his 2nd already disastrous term. Who will stand up to this dangerous gremlin???”
The world of music is filled with zillions of great quotes. One of my favorites is from Mr Toussaint - If a smile had a voice, it would be Lee Dorsey's.
Thank you for the concert info. Great collection of cartoons that are on point.
