Cartoons Wednesday!
Plus tribute to David Sanborn, with Leonard Cohen, and the Stones do Dylan.
Greg Mitchell is the author of more than a dozen books (see link) and now writer/director of three award-winning films aired via PBS, including “Atomic Cover-up” and “Memorial Day Massacre” which are still up at PBS.org. Before all that, he was a longtime editor of the legendary Crawdaddy. You can still subscribe to this newsletter for free.
You’ve probably heard or read that great saxophonist David Sanborn has died at the age of 78 and that since the late 1960s he played with countless jazz and rock artists, including Bowie and Springsteen and on and on, plus created his own solo albums. Below find one of his breakthroughs, with Paul Butterfield’s Blues Band in 1968 on classic “In My Own Dream,” he starts soloing after the three-minute mark.
Sanborn’s “Night Music” TV show presented all sorts of combos of performers, with for me the most memorable, below, when Leonard Cohen was joined by Sonny Rollins of “Who By Fire”, as Dave steps aside, for one of television’s greatest moments ever. First in clip below we see Sanborn aiding Leonard’s “Tower of Song.”
Elsewhere, yes, the Stones this week did trot out their cover of Bob’s “Like a Rolling Stone,” complete with a Mick harp solo.
