The cover charge, if any, must have been modest because I was financing my life on fumes that summer. One of my fonder memories of matter-of-fact resilience was deciding between buying gas or a doughnut with considerably less than a dollar in hand. I bought one gallon of gas (26 cents) and one doughnut (about 20 cents). They were sufficient.
