Colbert and Kimmel Return (and Blast Trump)
Plus our usual cartoons, and Pete Seeger and Bruce, and a timely "Bombshell."
A timely reminder: Film for which I served as adviser, and in which I appear as a talking head, “Bombshell,” is airing nationally over PBS “American Experience” tonight. The post-Hiroshima response in America is a subject I’ve covered for more than four decades. Afterward you can let me know what you think of it in Comments here, or ask questions. Wall Street Journal review seems to not be behind the pay wall right now, and ditto for Foreign Policy, but I will excerpt from them below to make it easy for everyone. In many cities my current film “The Atomic Bowl” follows it tonight.
Stephen returned from holiday break last night to begin final months on the air:
Kimmel also back with review of Trump’s past two weeks:
Jon Stewart interviewed Sen. Mark Kelly about new charges of “sedition” from Pete Hegseth.
Meanwhile, headline at The Onion: Maduro Charged With Felony Oil Possession.
Paul Krugman on Jan. 6 anniversary of what he calls our new Day of Infamy:
Five years ago Donald Trump tried to overthrow an election he lost. He failed, and I assumed that the threat was over. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine that he would make a comeback and return to the White House. But there he is. And he’s every bit as bad as his opponents and critics warned he would be.
I’m not going to talk today about how we got here and strategies for getting out. All I want to do right now is to say that we should be clear about what is happening. American fascism is on the march, and anyone who balks at saying that clearly, who makes excuses and pretends that Trump and the people he brought in aren’t monsters, is deeply unpatriotic. If we are to have a chance at saving democracy, our first duty must be clarity. No sanewashing, no bothsidesing. Only facing the horrible truth can set us free.
Had to enjoy complete screw-up at Bari bad CBS in first moments of lightweight new anchor’s debut.
Was not aware until last night that Pete Seeger recorded Bruce’s “The Ghost of Tom Joad” late in his career, with Springsteen singing some. Posting now as song helped inspire my next film, in which it will prominently appear.
