Don't Do Iran-Iran, Don't Do Iran
Plus Nick Drake, Colbert AND Louis Cato, a Seeger session, and our usual cartoons.
Greg Mitchell is the author of more than a dozen books and now writer/director of three award-winning films aired via PBS, including “Atomic Cover-up” and “Memorial Day Massacre.” Now watch trailer for acclaimed 2025 film “The Atomic Bowl” coming to PBS in July. Before all that, he was a longtime editor of the legendary Crawdaddy. You can still subscribe to this newsletter for FREE. Sustain this newsletter by ordering one of his books.
Final day of traveling today so once again with slightly rushed posting, but I know you want your cartoons as I head to the car tunes, so see below.
Let me leave you with a few things. Last night’s Colbert monologue:
Speaking of Colbert, his bandleader Louis Cato has a just released single and video, “Black Man Blues,” and it is indeed real old school blues….and his mood far from his usual smiling persona on the TV.
Big fan of Mackenzie Crook going back to original UK “The Office”—he played the Gareth (“Dwight” in USA) character—and more recently the wonderful series “The Detectorists” (which he co-created). Now he has a little book, that he’s also illustrated, related to one of my favorite artists, and titled “If Nick Drake Came to My House.”
….and here’s Glen Hansard covering one of Nick’s great songs, “Place to Be.”
Moving along, time this week to revive Pete’s message from awhile back:
You may have heard about ICE agents blocked from entering parking lot at Dodgers Stadium in L.A., though facts still disputed. I had to recall the history of the site, Chavez Ravine, where longtime Latino residents were evicted in the early 1950s, paving the way for the Dodgers to build their stadium. So I will note again that Ry Cooder created a masterpiece about that, titled “Chavez Ravine,” which includes the moving song, “3rd Base, Dodger Stadium” (where the character in the song grew up), here it is, co-written but not sung by Ry:
My wife made sure I saw this….Heather Cox Richardson, with a Hiroshima reference, on the Trump cult’s battle over the USA attacking Iran:
In contrast, the evangelical MAGA wing sees support for Israel as central to the return of Jesus Christ to Earth in the end times. Earlier this month the U.S. ambassador to Israel, former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, said the U.S. was abandoning its longstanding support for a Palestinian state. Huckabee is a strong supporter of the expansion of Israel’s settlements. After the Israeli strikes, Huckabee messaged Trump to urge him to listen to the voice of God. In an apparent reference to Truman’s decision to drop a nuclear weapon on Japan at the end of World War II, Huckabee told Trump: “No President in my lifetime has been in a position like yours. Not since Harry Truman in 1945.”
From Tunes to Toons
Barry Blitt says Trump not worthy of being called a King.
Steve Brodner:
Damn, Gregg, Lotta stuff here today
I could watch Stephen Colbert drink cocktails all day long, love the fruit slice
Matt Wuerker really loads up a political cartoon
Louis Cato is the Goods for certain
Can anyone explain why the trumpers hate trans people? The few I’ve known are the nicest, most peaceful souls.
