Steve Brodner on new Nobel Peace Prize winner, who is not named Trump.
Kimmel last night on Trump really WANTING that prize, and more.
You may have read something about this going back a few weeks when the movie started showing up at film festivals but now it’s finally here, opening in theaters tomorrow and via Netflix two weeks later. It’s Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow’s “A House of Dynamite,” her first film in eight years, which imagines (in real time, at least in part) how a U.S. president and various advisers and military leaders would react to a mysterious nuke suddenly appearing over the Pacific and heading (for some reason) for the American Midwest. It stars, among many others, Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson and Jared Harris and is partly based on Annie Jacobsen’s recent bestseller “Nuclear War: A Scenario.”
Reviews have been mainly strong, including today’s in The New York Times. It closes with this:
I imagine that when she started on “A House of Dynamite,” her models were sober works of realism about the nuclear threat, like Sidney Lumet’s 1964 “Fail Safe,” a cautionary film that appeals both to the audience’s intelligence and its reason. Who could have known that by the time Bigelow’s movie opened, reality would look more like “Dr. Strangelove”?
Turning Point USA, the organization founded by the late right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, announced that it will be hosting its own Super Bowl halftime show to rival the NFL’s. Now here is The Daily Show’s Desi Lydic as a typical Fox News host who tries to explain why Bad Bunny Rabbit at Super Bowl is bad idea. I’d add: I guess Bad Bunny put the hop in hip-hop, or is it jump music?
Just out today: another cut from the forthcoming collection of early and very early Dylan recordings, some before he even came to NYC. But this one comes later, an alt-take of his song “Boots of Spanish Leather.”
Well, this is something different. Someone took old song “I’m a Punk Rocker” and matched it with NYC mayoral leader Zohran Mamdani as a tribute. Iggy Pop, who was part of the recording—which recently re-surfaced as part of the soundtrack for the latest “Superman” movie (Lois Lane apparently claims she is “punk”)—expressed his approval of the song’s inclusion in the film, saying “I always thought the track had soul. Superman is the best friend you could have.”
It’s John Prine’s birthday today so let us announce that this concert film tribute to him will be arriving on Nov.28. More tomorrow.
