Greg Mitchell is the author of more than a dozen books (see link) and now writer/director of three award-winning films aired via PBS, including “Atomic Cover-up” and “Memorial Day Massacre” which are still up at PBS.org. You can still subscribe to this newsletter for free.
Haven’t posted anything here for the past week, as we enjoyed a short vacation out in Truro. So, coming at some point this weekend, a collection of photos that I took out there. For now, another award announcement, and a few political cartoons, but first these songs.
Gaby Moreno, a frequent Grammy nominee, performed this fine, rocking song on the Kimmel show this week, backed by Dan Knobler on lead guitar. As I have written previously, Dan is the son of my Zygote and Crawdaddy partner in crime, and friend since, Peter Knobler, going back to, oh, 1970. Dan is now an ace producer down in Nashville, piloting among other projects the breakthrough first solo album by one of my favorites, Allison Russell, and now served as a producer of the latest Gaby album. In this clip he plays slide, like my hero, Ry Cooder. So, below it, we can watch Gaby sing one of the great songs of our era, co-written by Ry, “Across the Borderline.”
Here she sings recently with fellow native of Guetemala, actor Oscar Isaac.
Now a little news: Learned this week that my PBS film “Memorial Day Massacre: Workers Killed, FIlm Buried” has received an Emmy nomination (in the Culture/History category) with the winners to be announced at a gala ceremony in L.A. near the end of July. This is my first Emmy nod of any sort, though I’ve only been writing and directing films for four years now. As I have mentioned numerous times, the film was posted free to watch at PBS.org and all PBS apps…until this week! But I hope we can get encore streaming now leading up to the awards. You can also consult the film’s web site for much background and response by notables, and/or check out my companion book of the same title.
