In Mexican folklore hummingbirds are seen as a messenger from the spirit world and a symbol of strength, love and rebirth. Thank you for this lovely photo.
As a longtime, avid birder, amateur nature photog and retired studio TV animation arstist/cartoonist (still cartooning at almost 80-years-young), I look forward to more of your "Photo Finish" offerings.
Reminds me of the LIFE magazine regular "parting shot" photo featured on the final page of the mag.
Great sharp-focused shot of what would likely be a Ruby-throated Hummer. Never easy to capture these amazing little creatures in hovering mode. We're spoiled out here in So-Cal w/ so many hummer species, the Anna's and Allen's being the most common.
By-the-by, love your taste in pop music and excellent selection of political cartoons. Particularly dig Brodner, Telnaes, de Adder, Ohman, Wexler and Wuerker.
thanks, yes my son in Pasadena has feeders on his balcony and gets those....I will be posting many more of my bird photos--often raptors--in months ahead...
I have been trying for years to catch one in flight and no success yet. But with 8 feeders around the house I hope one day. May I print yours as inspiration it is so perfect? My feeders also attract an oriole family for 5 years now. SoCal is so varied!
Love this hummingbird. A moment of beauty in an increasingly less beautiful world.

thank you, and I have many, many shots as we get hummers all summer on deck for several years now...

Wow! Great humming bird pic. You don't see many from the back like that. Very interesting perspective.
Love the idea of your photo of the day!
thanks, I am heartened by the response, subjects will vary greatly (and locales)...
Hummingbird pix is lovely.
Yes!!!
I was never much a Mac or Nicks fan either and that version of Not Fade Away is pretty lame.
Great shot of the hummingbird. The Ann Telnaes cartoon got me.

There's almost always a Kinks song to fit the occasion. Happy autumn!
