Song of the Day: I've Got "I've Got You, Babe"
With a little help from Etta James, UB 40 & Chrissie Hynde, David Bowie & Marianne Faithfull, and Beyonce as young Etta--plus Joni Mitchell sings this week!
Greg Mitchell is the author of a dozen books and now writer/director of award-winning films. He was also a longtime editor of the legendary Crawdaddy.
As we’ve noted previously, we are big fans of The Last of Us, and often its soundtrack of songs, sometimes not the obvious, from Depeche Mode to my man, Hank Williams. Its episode this week might have been its weakest by far but at a key moment it featured a cover of the Sonny & Cher classic “I’ve Got You Babe” by the great Etta James that few had probably heard, since it was not released for many years. So here it is below, along with covers by Bowie and Marianne Faithfull, UB40 and Chrissie Hynde, and then Beyonce performing an Etta classic.
But first, Joni Mitchell picked up the prestigious Gershwin songwriting reward from the Library of Congress on Wednesday night and was serenaded by her usual fans, James Taylor, Diana Krall, Graham Nash, Brandi Carlile, Annie Lennox and others. The surprise was that she got up and sang a couple of tunes herself, including Gershwin’s “Summertime.” You can read about it at length here, plus a video below which has a bit of her singing “Summertime.” Now, please subscribe, it’s still free!

The rocking Etta cover
UB40 and Chrissie Hynde live, I believe this was a hit in the UK.
Astounding live version by David Bowie and Marianne Faithfull (already with deep voice) in, shall we say, full outer space costumes, plus here’s a link to a 14-minute video of the rehearsal!
Beyonce as Etta in the fine “Cadillac Records” film….
