Vance Booed, a New John & Yoko, Plus: a Pink, a Pink, a Pink Moon
And, of course, last night's Colbert and today's cartoons.
Greg Mitchell is the author of more than a dozen books and now writer/director of three award-winning films aired via PBS, including “Atomic Cover-up” and “Memorial Day Massacre.” Now watch trailer for acclaimed 2025 film “The Atomic Bowl.” Before all that, he was a longtime editor of the legendary Crawdaddy. Lot to get to. First, for a smile from the NYT:
It was supposed to be a moment of celebration: Vice President JD Vance was attending a concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington on Thursday evening for the first time since President Trump’s stunning takeover of the institution.Instead, as Mr. Vance took his seat in the box tier with the second lady, Usha Vance, loud boos broke out in the auditorium, lasting roughly 30 seconds, according to audience members and a video posted on social media. Mr. Vance was shown in the video waving to the audience as he settled into his seat.
Next, for more smiles, last night’s Colbert monologue. I started posting them this week and on both occasions they proved to be the most popular vids here (including music), so I’d appreciate your reactions in Comments, but here we go again:
Now on to film and music. Combining both: first trailer for the upcoming (April 11 in theaters and even IMAX) doc “One to One” on John & Yoko and their free concert in NYC in early 1970s. This happens to be a time when we were fairly engaged with the couple in NYC at Crawdaddy (which, like them, was based in the Village). John contributed a couple of reviews of his own album, previewed lyrics, submitted a fun selfie (at a urinal with the caption “just pissing about”) and sat for an exclusive cover story and radio interview—even took out a full-page ad in the New York Times boosting Crawdaddy—so this brings back a lot of 1972 memories for yours truly:
Finally, for those who stayed up for—or at least were interested in—last night’s Blood Moon and lunar eclipse: Three swell if brief covers of Nick Drake’s immortal “Pink Moon.” First, Jeff Tweedy has a go at it live:
Then a fun version by Valerie June:
And don’t miss this Elizabethan classic:
Thank you for the Cobert video! That's one if his best–especially the Tesla pun!
Also, thank you so much for the cartoons. Gallows humor is much needed these days!
I totally agree!!! Please keep including both the Colbert videos and the always fabulous music. The cartoons are the icing on the delightful cake every day.
