Then, of course, there's Tom Lehrer's "Folk Song Army"

Remember the war against Franco?

That's the kind where each of us belongs

Though he may have won all the battles

We had all the good songs

No trouble here with the music. The Irish version had me tearing up again. They ought to play Woody’s song everywhere he goes. Of course he probably doesn’t realize who it’s about.

Greg, Love the Irish, Folk version of Bruce's "Streets of Minneapolis". Sometimes, like with Bob, one needs to hear another's version/cover to discover the true beauty and power of a song. This is an example of that. I will pass on (and play it again for myself).

Thanks for sharing the New Yorker piece. I believe that the main value of protest songs (the old ones and the new ones) is to build group solidarity on the ground when people get together to (gasp) actually protest, something the author notes in the conclusion.
