Hot news and politics takes, cartoons, James Baldwin, controversy over Jon Stewart on Wuhan, and music today from the Drive-By Truckers, Bonnie Raitt and Pink Floyd.
The piece on James Baldwin was worth the price of admission if there was one. And it was great seeing Norton Buffalo on the Bonnie Raitt piece, you should do an article on him, that was a lost talent.
Love the video from Bonnie Raitt. I'd even submit that her cover of Runaway is better than the original.
I'd echo the other comment about the Pulitzer snub of editorial cartoons. I have always followed editorial cartoons very closely. I think it stems from my 8th grade social studies class where we had to review and analyze a cartoon every week and even try our hand at a couple ourselves. As I recall, I tried to draw something about vote tampering in the 1985 Aquino-Marcos race in the Philippines and made a lame joke about the Thrilla in Manila. What can I say, I was 13.
Thank you for the Angela Fu piece at Poynter about the Pulitzer cartoon prize. I'm still stunned at this decision. Is the Board for cartooning the same as for other prizes and do we know who is on that board? As someone who works in part on nineteenth-century caricature, I'm very attentive to how much cartoon artists are able to make tiny dents in the crazy and I really looked forward to seeing some of the courageous artists who 'drew" truth to power be awarded this year. I hope you continue to follow this since you do such a great job of signalling the best work of the day in cartooning!
As the editor of Editor & Publisher from 2001-2009, I became expert on Pulitzer judging. There have been other scattered years when they did not award a prize in one category, usually something like feature writing. I suspect that in this year's case the final panel may have felt the three finalists were picked partly for "diversity" reasons and, right or wrong, their work was not quite up to "standards." Only thing I can imagine.
I feel relieved. Likewise. Deleted my nightly DVR before his appearance. Enjoy Colbert’s monologue and usually a second bit after one commercial. If Ringo or other worthy is on I keep watching otherwise I usually delete.

Is it the Colbert show or Stuart you find cringe worthy?
Stewart's appearances
