I found the the four part reply by Donald McNeil totally plausible and very upsetting. Certainly there is a fine line between saying inappropriate remarks and trying to have an honest discussion - especially, I suppose, amongst young adults whom you might expect would revel in the opportunity to have provocative discourse. He made it clear that he could be bristley and argumentative, but this trip sounds like it ended up beingan opoprtunity to gang up on a "know it all reporter" and teach him a thing or two. Regardless it feels very unfair. It certainly lowers my opinion of the NYT. I'm eager to hear more. Thanks for including it.
