Thank you for your good work on this post. I was in tears, in the middle of reading the moving lyrics of “Deportee,” when my daughter, who teaches music history and world music at a state university called. She was preparing to rehearse for a concert, and I told her how happy it made me when my children gave others the gifts of music, like flower bouquets to lift our hearts, like the hope I felt from the lyrics I was just reading in your post.

Glad that Johnny Rodriguez was mentioned in one of the replies. He just died on May 9. He and Cash also did a nice job with the song.

I didn't know this song, nor the amazing and infuriating and moving story about this song. Thanks for sharing it (and all the versions!) and teaching me something new.

I love playing this song on guitar. Seems especially relevant in these times. The Highway men (Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, and Willie along with guest Johnny Rodriguez) do a great cover of this as well.

Again today, you have educated me about an event that happened just before my birth. Thank you for that vital piece of education and for the music that brings it home to the heart. Each performance is memorable.

Thank you for all of this, the history, the music, and the sadness for forgetting that those being deported all had names and families. When I was 12 years old my family moved from the city to a farm. Talk about culture shock. I worked in the fields with migrant workers, mostly from Mexico. Hard working families, groups, kind and lovely people. I will never forget them and what wonderful people they were. They all are our brothers and sisters. ❤️

Love this song…first heard it covered on a Trio album, I think Trio II, or maybe Nanci’s great Other Voices, Other Rooms compilation.

Was pretty sure the song would be "Deportee" when I saw your tweet. Thanks for educating a new generation about it.

I've known the song a long time. I did not know it was Woody Guthrie's last before Huntington's disabled him.

Darn it. Usually your cartoon choices make me cry today it was your blog and the last toon. In case anyone doesn’t know the little Gaza girl survived her ordeal too but almost all her family didn’t.
